In the past, the village of
Bani Jamra was home to over 100 textile weaving workshops, but
competition from imports has reduced the demand for
locally-woven and embroidered fabrics, and today only a few
workshops remain.
Here, skilled weavers weave threads imported from India and
China into abbayas, traditional black cloaks for women, as well
as brightly-checked sarongs for men.
